Global Warming Issues

Solar panels have been a known alternative energy source for years, yet high overhead costs often deter home and business owners from installing them.

Tony Kawaguchi, a realtor from Hawaii has sent me a testimonial and requested I spread the word a bit about solar. Tony put 18 solar PV panels and 2 solar water panels on his house in an effort to save money, get off the grid, and of course save Co2 emissions.

A chunk of Antarctic ice 9 times the size of Manhattan collapsed into the ocean on Tuesday. Scientists have reportedly attributed the collapse to the effects of global warming and say the rest of the ice shelf, which is roughly the size of the state of Connecticut, is currently only supported by a thin beam of ice and is at risk to collapse as well. So, in light of our recent discussion, I was contacted by John Cook of Skeptical Science. Skeptical Science is a website entirely devoted to ‘examining the science of global warming skepticism’ and is a very interesting and thorough resource. No matter what your position on this issue, I would encourage you to check it out and as with every issue, educate yourself as much as possible before you formulate an opinion.

Prompted by a recent comment that was made based on the opinion that many scientists believe global warming is a natural phenomenon, rather than a man-made problem, I tried to find evidence of such scientists. I came across the Pew Center on Global Climate Change in Virginia, the Marian Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington DC, and many other credible scientific sources that support the human influence hypothesis when I searched for “global warming and science.” I will admit, I did find one scientist who disagrees when I searched for “global warming and natural” – which, to be fair, is a much more ‘leading’ search prompt.

In any case, we at GWI are not denying there are people in disagreement, we are simply trying to back up our position with the plentiful scientific evidence that’s out there. Please feel free to leave comments or to contact us via email with any supporting or refuting comments, complaints, and opinions. Public education is a noble cause, whether through a grassroots effort such as this, or through first-hand research and reporting. We’re just trying to do our part, and we hope you’ll do the same.

So, in light of recent political events, I’ve decided that it’s my responsibility as an eco-friendly, voting citizen, to take a closer look at the presidential candidates’ take on global warming, energy, and the environment. And, if you think about it, there’s no better place for accurate information about a candidate’s stance on the issues than their very own website. So, here are a few links directly to each candidate’s “environmental” page. I hope you take some time to look through this and other issues that are important to you, before deciding who you want to run this country. I know it’s been a long time since my last post, but Global Warming isn’t going anywhere soon, so I’m back at it. I came across an interesting article this morning about carbon trading and global warming. It goes over the basics of carbon credits, deforestation, and CO2 emissions. So, if you’re looking for a little information on those subjects, check it out!

New reports indicate that about one in every three people, living on southern coastlines in the United States would ignore calls for evacuation in the event of a hurricane. These stats are most likely in response to the poor aid that was given to victims of hurricane Katrina who did evacuate their homes. What most residents fail to realize, however, is that refusing to evacuate not only puts their lives in more danger, but also makes rescue attempts more challenging and risky. This new trend, combined with the projected 2007 hurricane season – which will be worse than the last due to global warming and other factors, according to scientists – could prove to be a costly and perhaps deadly combination.
